Introduction

Microbial Sketching Workshop was developed from my ongoing artistic project Microbial Sketching, inviting participants to explore the landscape through observation rather than assumption. Beginning with a walk through the surrounding environment, participants collected plants, soil, stones, and other natural materials before examining them under a microscope. The workshop encouraged a shift in perspective—from seeing landscapes at a human scale to discovering the unfamiliar forms and structures hidden within everyday nature.

Rather than producing scientific illustrations, participants transformed their observations into paintings. Moving between close observation and artistic interpretation, the workshop introduced abstraction as a way of responding to the visual complexity of the microscopic world. Through this process, participants experienced drawing as an act of looking carefully, where painting became a means of understanding the landscape from a different scale.
