Hualien Earthquake Sketching Group Exhibition
presented as part of Planet Explosion Observatory at The 3rd PALAFANG Hualien Art Festival.
The Hualien earthquake on April 3, 2024, fundamentally changed the relationship we had long maintained with the land. Two or three weeks after the disaster, we came across a site where the remains of demolished buildings had been piled up. A group of friends who had all grown up, lived, and practiced as artists in Hualien began an unplanned sketching project. Carrying only paper and pencils, we visited the site at night, quietly observing the "new mountains" formed by piles of architectural debris, attempting to record the rapidly changing landscape through drawing.
It was under these circumstances that the Earthquake Sketching Group came into being. At first, we had no defined artistic agenda, nor had we considered how art should respond to disaster. We were simply driven by the impulse to witness the site firsthand, to experience it, and to leave behind a record. As the post-earthquake landscape continued to shift, we repeatedly returned to observe, draw, and document. At once survivors and observers, we relearned how to look at the familiar land we call home. These works record not only the physical transformations brought about by the earthquake, but also our own experiences as residents of Hualien confronting loss, change, and recovery.
Over the course of several months, the project consisted of six collective sketching excursions. The resulting works were presented across three venues as part of Planet Explosion Observatory at The 3rd PALAFANG Hualien Art Festival, marking the first public presentation of the project's ongoing research and artistic practice.

Guofu Construction Waste Site (Night)
June 16, 2024
Our first visit to the Guofu construction waste site took place late at night. Beneath the dark silhouette of the mountains stood a series of smaller hills, formed from the debris of buildings demolished after the earthquake. Twisted steel bars protruded from the mounds. Thunder rumbled overhead, rain began to fall, and we sat quietly on the grassy riverbank, gazing at the landscape before us.

Wanrong Wild Hot Spring – Morisaka
July 9, 2024
Earthquakes are inseparable from tectonic movement, and on this geologically active land, many natural hot springs have emerged through geothermal activity. We hiked upstream to a remote wild hot spring in the mountains, using river water, branches, and other materials found on site as our drawing tools.

Guofu Construction Waste Site (Day)
July 10, 2024
Returning to the Guofu construction waste site in broad daylight, we climbed onto the mounds themselves. Household belongings and fragments of everyday life had been crushed together with concrete and rubble after the earthquake. These hills carried the remains of buildings that had once stood throughout the city, along with the memories of the lives once lived within them.
National Dong Hwa University
July 11, 2024
Following the earthquake, a fire broke out in the College of Science and Engineering at National Dong Hwa University, leaving the building severely burned. Several months later, we entered the abandoned structure and used charred wood collected from the site as drawing material. We depicted overturned desks, shattered windows, and blackened corridors, while the cooing of pigeons echoed repeatedly through the empty hallways.
Lingding Fault (77 Highland & Dongshan Anle Cemetery)
July 12, 2024
After visiting the wild hot spring, we wanted to search for the fault line itself. We traveled to the Lingding Fault, hoping to find traces of the tectonic forces that had moved the land beneath our feet.
Qingshui Cliff & Taroko Gorge
August 6, 2024
This was our first return to Taroko Gorge after the earthquake, where landslides had caused extensive destruction. The mountains seemed to have lost their colors, enormous boulders rested in front of houses, and dust filled the air. Later that day, we boarded a boat off the coast of Qingshui Cliff. As we looked toward the scarred mountainside, several dolphins leapt from the sea. The captain said, "Recovery does not mean returning to the way things were; it means regaining vitality." At that moment, we understood that for nature, damage does not signify an ending, and change is not necessarily a source of sorrow.
